Ms. Wendy De Vos from Parrow North Primary School teaches addition and subtraction using a number line to her Grade 3 learners. The lesson is split into three sections which are concrete, representative and abstract. The teacher uses learners prior knowledge and the concrete apparatus to revise number concepts before dealing with addition and subtraction. The representative activity also involves working with a number line and then slowly introducing the idea of using a number line to add or subtract. Only once the teacher is happy with the concrete and representative activities does she start the abstract section of this lesson. The sums on written on the board and as a class they first do a few examples before the learners work indecently to complete some examples.
