Numbers & Calculations with Numbers is one of three Basic Skillstopics in the curriculum and so can be thought of as foundational to theApplication Topicsin the curriculum. Much of the content in the Basic Skills Topics comprises elementary mathematical content and skills that learners have already been exposed to in Grade 9 (e.g. different number formats and conventions, calculating percentages, drawing graphs from tables of values, and so on). The inclusion of this content in the CAPS provides teachers with the opportunity to revise these important concepts and provide learners with the opportunity to explore these concepts in contexts. It is expected that a firm grasp of the concepts in the Basic Skills Topics is necessary for making sense of the content and contexts outlined in the Application Topics.
