This lesson shows learners a specific cause of grammatically incorrect writing – ambiguity. Learners are taught what ambiguity is and what causes it. Furthermore, this lesson enables learners not only to identify ambiguous statements, but to correct them as well. As an extension to this lesson, ask learners to think of jokes or find cartoons that rely on a double meaning to create humour and compare these to “funny” extracts from texts such as newspaper headlines where there is an unintentional ambiguity. Explain to them that there is a difference between intentional double meanings such as puns and jokes, and unintentional ambiguities.
