Literal and Figurative Meaning I

In this lesson we define literal and figurative language and differentiate between them. A range of activities could be planned to develop an understanding of the differences between these two types of language: you could clip a range of headlines from the newspaper and get learners to sort these into literal and figurative uses of language, or you could get learners to make collages of their own examples. Another fun activity that emphasises the difference between literal and figurative language use is to get learners to draw pictures to illustrate common idiomatic expressions both in their literal and figurative sense.
