The Humour of English

The first lesson introduces learners to the concept of humour. We look at some of the roles that humour plays in society – such as helping to people relax and conveying information in a memorable way. We also consider some of the factors that determine whether or not people will find a joke funny – such as their personal taste, where they are from and whether they understand the references that are used. After you have shown this lesson to the class, ask learners to tell jokes in small groups. The groups should then discuss what was funny about the joke, what references people would need to be familiar with to understand the joke and whether the joke would be likely to offend anyone.
